How to Put Up Liberty Spikes
Liberty spikes are a hairstyle named after their visual similarity to the Statue of Liberty's crown. The spikes are long, pointy and often dyed. Mohawks are often teased into liberty spikes. Good liberty spikes need to be strong enough to survive normal daily activity, but even the strongest spikes have to be redone at least once a week. Before liberty spikes are redone, thoroughly wash all of the hair. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Comb the hair straight and separate it into small bunches. Each bunch is one spike. Tie the bunches off with rubber bands.
-
2
Hold the bunch of hair that is against the forehead straight out. Pull hard enough so the scalp lifts, but it shouldn't cause pain. Push the rubber band as far toward the scalp as possible.
-
-
3
Spray the mat of hair under the rubber band with hairspray until it is soaking. Slowly pull up on the rubber band and work the hairspray up the hair. Remove the rubber band, but keep firm hold of the hair. Spray all of the hair in the spike with hairspray while the spike is extended.

4
Blow dry the hair. Set the dryer to a hot setting and hold it close to the hair so it will dry quickly. When it is completely dry, let go. If it bends, reapply a thick coat of hairspray to the weak area.
-
5
Twist a small amount of hair gel into the tip of the spike to keep it from fraying.

Tips & Warnings
For additional strength, coat the spikes with a mixture of strong hair gel or white school glue and water. Put a liberal amount of hair gel in a small bowl. Pour a splash of water in the bowl to thin the gel and help it spread easier. Coat each spike with a thin layer of the mixture. This will weaken the spike at first, so hold it tightly with one hand. Apply the mixture heavier at the base of the spike. Dry the spike with a blow dryer.
