How to Set Up Proxy Servers

Proxy servers are servers that exist between an Internet server and a client application, such as a web browser. Proxy servers are useful because they can improve performance and filter requests. For example, large companies use proxy servers to filter out websites they do not want their employees to access. To install most proxy servers, you need your own server space and domain name. However, with the use of Google's App Engine, you can create your own proxy server for free.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Google App Engine website (see Resources) and sign into your Google account. Click the "Create Application" button to begin. Google will send you a code via SMS message. Input the code to begin your app.

    • 2

Select a sub-domain to host your proxy server. Check the availability of the name and then agree to the Google terms and select "Save."

    • 3

Create and upload the proxy server to the Google App engine by visiting the Phython website and downloading 2.6.4 MSI Installer (see Resources).

    • 4

Install the Python program by following the onscreen directions and then visit the Google Code website (see Resources) to download the Google App Engine SDK for Python. Install it by following the onscreen prompts.

    • 5

Visit the Labnol website (see Resources) and download the proxy zip folder. Unzip the contents into a folder on your desktop.

    • 6

Launch the Google App Engine Launcher by clicking the icon that was installed to your desktop. Select "Edit" and "Preferences" to set the desired values for your proxy server.

    • 7

Select "File" and then "Add Existing Application." Browse to the folder where you unzipped the Labnol proxy files. Select "Edit" and then replace YOUR_APP_ID with the name you chose in step 2.

    • 8

Select "Deploy" to begin using your online proxy server.
