How to Transfer Stencils

Stencils are often used to help tattoo artists create the perfect tattoo. The lines of the tattoo design are transferred from the stencil paper onto the skin in purple so that the artist can easily discern where to tattoo the skin. Because they serve as a guide for the artist to ink over, stencils are one of the most important tools in the tattoo trade. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Create a tattoo design. Either draw one on a sheet of paper or create one on your computer and print it out.

    • 2

Place the tattoo design on the sheet of stencil paper. Use a pencil to trace along the lines of the design to transfer the design to the stencil paper.

    • 3

Cut out the stencil, trimming the excess paper from the design.

    • 4

Spray a paper towel with soap. Clean the area of skin that you plan to tattoo.

    • 5

Shave the skin with a razor. Wipe it with a paper towel and then spray it with soap again.

    • 6

Put on a pair of latex gloves. Place the stencil on the skin with the purple side facing down. Smooth the stencil out to remove any bubbles.

    • 7

Pull the stencil from the skin. Allow the stencil to dry completely before attempting to tattoo the skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Leave a small border around the stencil when you cut it out to make it easier to peel from the skin without smearing it.

  • Only a professional tattoo artist should perform a permanent tattoo.
