How to Raise the Lid on a 1979 GE Hotpoint Stove
Like most stoves today, the lid, or range top, on early-model GE Hotpoint stoves is removable. There were several different Hotpoint stoves manufactured in 1979. However, they can be split into four basic categories; including gas freestanding stoves, gas in-counter ranges, electric freestanding stoves and electric in-counter stoves. Removing the stove top is easier, if you have an extra person to help you. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Shut off the power to your GE stove, at the breaker switch.
-
2
Turn off the gas to your stove, if you have a GE gas stove. If your model is freestanding, simply scoot it out from the wall and turn the gas supply line off at the wall. If your stove is mounted into your counter, locate the gas connection. It will be located underneath, probably inside the cabinet.

3
Remove the metal burner plates by hand, and set them aside, if necessary.
-
4
Use a pry bar, or a large flat head screwdriver, and wedge it under the lip of the stove in the front, if you have an in-counter mounted stove. Pry upwards, until you or your helper can get a hand under the stove. You may have to work the pry bar around the entire stove top to loosen the seal.
Once it is completely loose, lift the stove top up and hold it. As you hold it, have someone disconnect all wiring from the underside. Once the wiring is disconnected, lift the stove top up and off.
If you have a free-standing model, ignore this step and move to the next.

Locate the screws on the top back-side of your stove, and remove them with a screwdriver. Pull up on the stove top until it comes free. Depending on your Hotpoint model, there may be several retaining clips that will need to be pushed inwards with a screwdriver, to free the stove top.
