Vinyl replacement windows are installed directly into the window frame. They must fit properly into the opening in order for them to be correctly installed. Measuring for vinyl replacement windows is the first step in the process of installing a new window.       Clean out the rough opening where the window will be installed to ensure there is no dirt and debris in the way. Wipe down the jamb along the sides and top with a clean rag.

      Line up a tape measure at the top left hand corner of the opening on the inside of the house. Run the tape measure from the trim on the left side straight across to the trim on the right side. Record the measurement. Move down to the middle of the window and run the tape measure across the window from trim to trim. Record that measurement. Run the tape measure along the bottom of the window from trim to trim and record that measurement.

      Measure the height of the window. Set a tape measure along the sill at the bottom left hand corner of the window. Run it vertically up to the jamb running across the top of the window and record the measurement. Move to the middle of the sill and repeat the process. Measure the right side of the window and record that measurement.

      Look at all of the recorded measurements and write down the smallest measurement for both the width and height of the opening. This size of the window will need to be purchased to fit into the opening.

Tips & Warnings

  • Record the measurements as exact as possible so the proper size window can be ordered.

  • The measurements are taken three times because they can be different from the top of the window to the bottom and from one side to the other. The smallest measurement must be taken so the window is not too big.
