The suede fabric on the outside of the boot can be a magnet for stains, however. Moisture, dirt and oil can cause ugly brown or black stains. Grind the chalk into a fine powder, and spread the powder over each stain. Allow the powder to sit for five to 10 minutes.

Squirt some liquid detergent into the bucket and fill it with cold water, creating equal amounts of water and foam. Avoid using hot water, as it will further damage the materials or shrink the boots.

Dip the sponge into the bucket, and moisten the outer surface of the boots, including the areas with the chalk powder. Do not dip the entire boot into the water, as this will also damage the surface and may shrink the boot. Rinse with cold, clean water.

Place the boots in a room-temperature environment to air-dry. Avoid placing the boots near a heat source or direct sunlight, as this may shrink the boots. When the boots finish drying, spray each one with water and oil repellent to prevent stains from occurring.
