How to Calculate GDS & TDS

"GDS" stands for "Gross Debt Service Ratio," and "TDS" stands for "Total Debt Service Ratio." These are two numbers that track how much of your yearly earnings is needed to cover your house payment and the amount of income to cover all of your debts and payments, respectively. Calculate your GDS and TDS ratios using a few pieces of information and a little common math.

Instructions

    • 1

Add up all of your total monthly payments, including any rent or mortgage payments, utility bills, insurance payments and other fees, to find the total amount of money you are paying each month. Only include bills and payments that relate to owning or renting a home.

    • 2

Divide the total number of payments from "Step 1" by the total amount of money you make from all sources each month. Multiply the number you get by 100 to find your Gross Debt Service Ratio, or GST. The number you get will be a percentage.

    • 3

Add to your number from "Step 1" any other expenses you have, such as student loans and credit card bills, that you didn't previously include.

    • 4

Divide the number from "Step 3" by your total monthly income. Multiply that number by 100 to find your Total Debt Service Ratio, or TDS. This number will be a percentage.
