How to Measure Checked Luggage

Luggage size requirements are determined by airlines.

Any luggage checked at the airport must meet the maximum size limits for the airline you're traveling with. Before packing your bags, contact your airline to learn the size limits on checked luggage. Most airlines allow you to go over the size requirements for checked luggage for a fee, which includes weight restrictions.

1. Visit your airline's website to see the size and weight restrictions in place for checked luggage. Typically this information is located under travel information in the baggage information section.

2. Review the size limitations and measure your luggage with a tape measure. Measure the depth of your bag in inches. Measure the width in inches. Measure the length in inches. Add the three measurements and compare the sum to the size limitation of your airline.

3. Weigh your bag to ensure it does not exceed the maximum weight limit. If your luggage does not meet the size requirements you will charged a fee by your airline.
