How to Repair Weak Flame in a Propane Torch

Low fuel is one possible reason for a weaker flame.

Propane torches have a variety of uses in industrial, culinary and artistic applications. The torch can be used to melt or roast food while preparing a meal, heat up or dry clay and other craft supplies in the creation of an artistic piece and solder copper piping in plumbing systems. A weaker flame will prevent the torch from creating the heat it needs to perform these and similar functions. Repairing a weak flame in a propane torch requires some basic troubleshooting.

Instructions

1. Turn the torch off and wait for it to completely cool before performing any inspection or troubleshooting.

2. Verify that your propane tank has enough fuel in it. If the tank is low on fuel, the torch won't be able to pull out enough fuel to produce a strong flame. Refilling the propane tank will fix the problem.

3. Examine the nozzle for any signs of clogging or debris. Clean out any blockages that could be affecting flame quality by wiping the nozzle with a damp cloth. Replacing the tip could also fix the issue.

4. Adjust the fuel and air mixture knobs on the torch (if your torch has those features). This will affect the amount of oxygen the torch receives and the rate at which is uses propane. Adjusting the mixture of fuel and air can increase the strength of your flame.

Tips & Warnings

• Always use a spark lighter to ignite a torch without its own starter. This is much less likely to result in an accident than a butane lighter, which could combust when the torch flame lights.
