How to Set a Hard Drive Password for a Dell Inspiron 6000

With identity theft becoming more and more common, protecting your personal data should be of paramount concern when you're traveling with your Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. To this end, Dell allows you to set a hard drive password from within the basic input/output system (BIOS). Setting a hard drive password prevents anyone from accessing the hard drive without the proper password. Even if the hard drive is removed from the Dell computer and accessed on a separate system, the hardware password remains in effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on or restart your Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop.

    • 2

Press "F2" when the Dell logo first appears to enter the BIOS, or Setup.

    • 3

Select System on the left side of the Setup utility by using your arrow keys and pressing "Enter."

    • 4

Select "System security and hard-drive password settings."

    • 5

Enter a password for your hard drive in the right-hand panel. If asked to confirm the password, enter it a second time.

    • 6

Press "F10" to save your settings and exit Setup.
