The biggest cost in switching from other modes of transportation to bicycle commuting is the bike itself. While there are some really great new bikes out there, you can save a lot of money by converting your current bike to meet your commuting needs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Think about the road conditions you'll encounter. If your commute is a little more rugged, make sure you'll feel safe with the frame and tires on your current bike.

  2. Step 2

Switch out mountain bike tires with excessive traction for smoother tires, which will enable you to ride more efficiently with less resistance.

  3. Step 3

Trade in thin road bike tires for wider ones, which will react more solidly to potholes.

  4. Step 4

Consider 36-spoke wheels for a road bike instead of the standard 32-spoke ones to gain more stability, since some road bikes may not be able to handle the same baggage loads that mountain and hybrid bikes can carry.

  5. Step 5

Add whatever accessories you might need: fenders, rack, lights, clipless pedals and handlebar extensions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cycling in traffic can be dangerous. Observe all traffic laws and avoid potential hazards.
