How to Build an Olympic Plate Rack

Weightlifting is a great way to tone your body in the comfort of your own home. Unfortunately dumbbells and weight plates can take up a lot of space, and can easily damage delicate objects if they are not stored securely. A weight rack can be the perfect solution to this problem, providing you with a compact, secure and organized structure to hold all of your weight-lifting equipment. Building your own Olympic plate rack can be somewhat difficult, and will require familiarity with the proper use of power tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the necessary supplies. Check junkyards, resale shops and thrift stores for good deals on old bed frame rails.

    • 2

Use your cut-off saw to cut the frame rails into 29-inch sections, work the saw slowly to ensure that the cuts are clean and even. Use your air drill and drill press to drill a hole 1 inch from the end of each of the rails.

    • 3

Drill holes into your wooden posts. These holes will be used to mount the frame rails to the posts. You should drill the holes about 1 foot apart from each other. You will need only three or four holes per wooden post.

    • 4

Cut your 1-by-6 board in half, creating two equal boards that are each 1.5 feet wide. Mount one plastic stand to each of the boards, then screw the stands securely into the wooden boards.

    • 5

Insert a wooden post into each of the plastic stands. Use your tape measure to measure the length of your frame rails. Spread the boards apart so that they are equal in distance to the length of your frame rails.

    • 6

Stand the rack so that the wooden posts are parallel and opposite to one another. Insert your remaining bed frame rails into the spaces where you drilled holes into the wooden posts. Secure each bed frame to the posts using a nut and bolt. Once all the frame rails have been secured, double check the bolts using a wrench to ensure that they are tightened sufficiently.
