Ensure that you mail your tax return to the correct address.

Federal Form 1040A -- also called the "short form" -- is the individual income tax return form for people who qualify to file a condensed version of Form 1040. As with other federal individual income tax return forms, form 1040A must be completed and filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on or before April 15 to be considered on time. If you will be unable to file your return by the deadline, you must file for an extension, which will extend your deadline for six months. To ensure that the IRS receives your form on time, it's important that you mail it to the correct address.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach copies of any tax paperwork, showing federal income tax withheld, to your 1040A form by stapling the forms to the front of your 1040A form.

    • 2

Place your return, tax forms and any payment due in a large envelope and seal the envelope securely. On the top left corner of the front of your envelope put your name and full return address.

    • 3

Locate the correct mailing address on the last page of the 1040A instruction booklet. The state in which you live determines where you will mail your return, as does whether or not you are enclosing a payment with your return. Locate your state in the far left column then choose the correct address shown to the right, based on whether or not you are sending a check or money order.

    • 4

Write the appropriate address on the front of your envelope. Take it to the post office to have it weighed, to ensure that you place the correct amount of postage on it. If you would like to have proof that the IRS receives your return, ask the postal service employee to mail your envelope with proof of delivery.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tax returns received by the IRS after the deadline are not considered late if they are postmarked on or before April 15.

  • The post office will return envelopes with insufficient postage, so ensure that you have the correct amount of postage before mailing your return.
