How to Put Keys Back on ThinkPad

A missing key on your IBM Thinkpad laptop computer certainly makes typing more difficult. Every time you want to type the letter with the missing key, you end up missing the button or poking the end of your finger. Replacing these keys is actually fairly simple. Provided you have the missing key and the parts to attach it, the repair takes just a few minutes. Nimble fingers and some patience is all you need.

Instructions

    • 1

Set down a sheet of clean white paper to assist in viewing the small pieces.

    • 2

Slide the black tab-shaped piece through the square piece, which has an empty center. Attach the resulting piece to the u-shaped piece by snapping it into the center. You will have one piece made up the three parts when you finish. The piece will fold out similar to a folding chair or accordion when you lift up on the top.

    • 3

Attach this piece to the keyboard in the area where the key is missing by inserting the piece into the two hooks sticking out from the keypad. Snap it into place. When properly inserted it will not come off the keyboard.

    • 4

Place the key with the letter side facing up and properly aligned with all the others onto the piece you just connected to the keypad.

    • 5

Apply pressure to the key with your finger until the key snaps into place. Tap the key to make sure it is properly attached. If not, realign it and press it into place until it clicks.
