1
Count the number of each letter you will need for your birthday banner. For example, if you want the banner to say, "Happy Birthday," you will need two H's, two A's, two P's, two Y's, one B, one I, one R, one T and one D. If you would like to include the person's name in the banner, add these letters as well.
-
2
Open a document in a word processing program and type the first letter you will need. Capital letters are generally easier to read on banners than lowercase letters.
-
-
3
Change the font of the letter until it is a style you like.
-
4
Increase the size of the letter so it fills the whole page. For most fonts, this will be approximately size 700.
-
5
Print the letter on a piece of white or colored paper, depending on what fits best with the other decorations for the party. If this letter appears more than once in your banner, print enough copies at this stage.
-
6
Delete the letter and replace it with the next letter in the banner. Repeat the printing process until you have all of the letters you need.
-
7
Tape all of the pieces of paper together in order to make the banner.

Tips & Warnings
To save money on ink, print just the outlines of the letters. In Microsoft Word, go to the "Format" menu, select "Font" and choose "Outline" under the "Effects" section. Color the letters in with crayons or markers. This is an easy way for kids to be involved in decorations.
Rather than taping the papers to each other, another way to create the banner is to tape the top of each paper to a string or ribbon.
Some websites offer printable letters already formatted to the size of a standard sheet of paper. If you prefer, you can use these instead of making your own in a word processing program.
