How to Repair Hollow Metal Door Frames

Hollow metal door frames that are bent or have been damaged need to be repaired. To do this, you need to remove the frame for the door. However, if the frame is twisted it may be impractical to try to bend the frame back into the correct shape. This means that fixing the frame will require replacing it with a new one. To do this, you will need to obtain a new hollow metal door that you can install in the existing door opening.

Things You'll Need

  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • Power drill
  • Shims

Removing The Old Door Frame

  • Remove the casing the surrounds the door frame by prying it off with the pry bar or the claw end of the hammer.

  • Pull the hinge pins out of the hinges with the pliers. Take out the door and set it aside. Unscrew the screws from the face of the frame with the power drill.

  • Pull the jambs of the frame out from the wall. Do this on one side of the frame at a time. Pry the jambs away from the wall with the pry bar if they do not come out easily.

  • Take out the frame and set it aside.

Installing The New Door Frame

  • Set the frame in the door opening. Hold a level to the top of the frame. Insert shims at the bottom of the frame until the top is level.

  • Insert screws into the holes in the floor plate and tighten with the power drill. If no holes are present in the floor plate you will need to drill new ones with the power drill.

  • Drive screws into the remaining mounting holes around the perimeter of the door frame.

  • Place the door on the hinges and insert the hinge pins. Tap the hinge pins with the hammer to seat them in the hinges, if necessary.
