Step-by-Step Spray Painting

Step-by-Step Spray Painting thumbnail
There are a lot of varieties of spray paint for doing custom finishes.

Give old items a new life and create craft projects with spray paint. Decorate craft projects by spray painting with stencils in a variety of colors. Spray paint creates a thin layer of paint that, when applied correctly, has an even appearance. Spray paints come in a variety of finishes, including matte, satin and gloss, and textured finishes such as hammered metal and stone. Specialty spray paints are available to paint over rust spots on metal, and to provide a protective coating to prevent further rusting. Use spray paint on surfaces such as wood, plastic, ceramic, metal and vinyl.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the instructions on the back of the can carefully. All spray paint manufacturers have different directions on how to use their products. Shake the can well.

    • 2

Prepare the surface of the project before spraying. Repair and sand the surface, and make sure the surface is clean of all dust and debris and fully dry before spraying.

    • 3

Place your mask over your face for protection and put the plastic gloves on to protect your hands from leaking paint. Spray paint contains chemicals that are toxic to inhale and will penetrate the skin. Place newspaper down to protect your surface, and place your project on the newspaper.

    • 4

Practice spraying on a separate piece of newspaper to get a feel for how close to spray to achieve desired effects. Check the instructions on the can for appropriate spraying distance. Practice spraying on an inconspicuous area of your project before starting to make sure the paint will adhere properly to the surface.

    • 5

Spray paint the project. Spray with several thin coats. Spray in all directions, moving fast. Spray a line of paint across the project to the left and then down and back to the right to ensure even coverage. Then spray from the bottom of the project to the top, moving to the right, and back down again. Check the can for exact instructions for this, as some spray paints have different processes.

    • 6

Allow the project to dry between each coat for the time recommended on the can's instructions. Once all layers have been applied, allow to dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours.
