Reaping the harvest was something that happened in ancient Israel every year. Wheat and other grains were harvested using a scythe or sickle tool. Both Old and New Testament prophets and teachers used the image of a worker harvesting grain to symbolize many things: doing God's work, experiencing God's blessings and receiving the just consequences of one's actions, including, in some cases, death.
