How to Unsubscribe From Internet Mailing Lists

How to Unsubscribe From Internet Mailing Lists thumbnail
Unsubscribe to annoying email lists to clean out your inbox.

Junk mail and emails from retailers can fill your inbox daily if you are on several mailing lists. Many of the senders may be unknown to you. Many may offer information you once found useful but is now an annoyance. The Can-Spam Law, passed in 2003, states that senders who use email lists must offer an opt-out option. Those who fail to do this can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission, or FTC, which passes the information on to law enforcement.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to your email. Locate all emails that you no longer wish to receive from their respective senders. You may want to temporarily move these to a separate folder for easier access.

    • 2

Open each email and scroll to the bottom. Locate the "Unsubscribe" link or instructions for unsubscribing. Most senders provide a link that automatically removes your email address from their list. Some senders require you to click their "Unsubscribe" link, then enter your email address in a pop-up and submit for removal. A few senders require the recipient to reply to the email with the word "Unsubscribe" in the subject line.

    • 3

Report the sender to the FTC if it does not offer an option for removing your email address from its list. You can do this by submitting a complaint form via the FTC website. Check your email provider's options for blocking the sender's emails.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check a company's privacy policy before you give them your email address. If the policy states that they may share your email address, you might want to decline.

  • Forward scam emails to spam@uce.gov.

  • Report the sender to the FTC if it does not honor the request to remove you from its mailing list.

  • Avoid posting your email address in public forums.
