How to Safely Secure the Bottom of an Extension Ladder
An extension ladder is a portable tool that someone can shorten to carry, or make longer, depending on the specific height at which an individual has to work. Important safety tips come into play when climbing or working on any ladder. An extension ladder only has two points of support on the ground, and one support point on top. 1
Examine the anti-slip safety feet on the base of the extension ladder. These feet need to be in proper working condition and undamaged.
-
2
Clear the ground or surface area where you need to place the ladder of any objects, such as boxes and scaffolds. See that you have no ice, snow, oil, or other slippery conditions present in the spot. Position the base of the extension ladder on a flat and stable surface facing the wall or support where you will be leaning the ladder.

Place the ladder's two feet onto the ground, at a distance away from the wall that is approximately one-fourth of the height that the ladder's side rails are extended. Lean the ladder, at an angle of 75 degrees, against the wall or support. Both of the ladder's rails need to be equally supported against the wall or support.
