How to Get the Brown Shell Off of a Coconut thumbnail
With a little effort, you can enjoy the sweet insides of a coconut.

The hard brown outer layer of a coconut is inedible and needs to be removed to access the sweet coconut meat inside. This is done by cracking the shell of the coconut and carving out the insides. The shell is very hard and cannot simply be cut or peeled open. Before opening the coconut, drain the juice into a cup so you can consume it later. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Juice the Coconut

    • 1

Place the coconut on a towel to keep it from rolling around.

    • 2

Hold a clean nail steadily against the coconut and hit the end with a hammer.

    • 3

Pull the nail out of the coconut using either your hand or the back end of the hammer.

    • 4

Capture the draining juice by placing the hole over a cup or container.

    De-shell the Coconut

    • 5

Wrap the coconut loosely in a towel and place it on a table or counter.

    • 6

Hit the coconut directly with the hammer continually until it cracks open.

    • 7

Hit the coconut pieces a few more times to break them up into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to remove the shell.

    • 8

Remove the white coconut meat from the brown shell by prying it away with a sharp knife. With a little effort, the pieces should come free from the shell cleanly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store coconut meat in an air-tight container. It will last a week in the refrigerator and one to three months in the freezer.
