How to Upgrade From Windows 2000 Pro to XP Pro Using a Second Hard Drive

Windows 2000 is an older operating system you can upgrade to the newer Windows XP Professional. Windows XP has a revamped interface and several options that are not available with the older Windows 2000 operating system. You can install the upgrade to a second hard drive on your computer. This ensures your current files are not overwritten, so you do not lose the older files you have on your current hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the installation disc in the computer's drive. The Windows XP installation disc automatically opens a splash screen on your desktop. Press "Enter" to begin the upgrade process.

    • 2

Press "F8" on the license agreement screen. Pressing "F8" selects "I agree" and moves you to the next screen. Click "Restart" on the next screen. Your computer reboots.

    • 3

Press the "Enter" key when the MS-DOS command prompt asks you to boot to the disc. This boots your computer to the XP installation disc and continues the upgrade process.

    • 4

Press "Enter" on the first welcome screen. Press "Enter" through each of the screens to keep the default values. When you reach the window asking you for the location of the Windows files, choose your second hard drive. Windows copies several temporary files on the second hard drive, and the system reboots again.

    • 5

Log in to the computer. This time, you see the new Windows XP interface. Click your username in the opening window and use your password to log in. The Windows XP interface opens. Windows 2000 is still available on your first drive, so you can transfer the information to your Windows XP drive or keep it stored in case you need it in the future.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your old Windows 2000 preferences are saved, but you must reconfigure Windows XP and set up your preferences again when you install to a separate hard drive.
