How Can I E-File an IRS Filing Extension?

E-file extensions are done when you can't file your federal tax return by the April 15 deadline (April 18 in 2011). You can use the IRS free file website to file form 4868 Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return as long as you provide the correct information on the 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ fillable tax form. It is free to e-file an extension with the IRS free file fillable forms.
