How Do I Pull a Submersible Well Pump?
If your property's water is drawn from a well, you have a pump. There are two types of well pumps -- ground level and submersible. A ground level pump pulls the water up a pipe through the use of suction, while a submersible pump pushes water up a pipe by creating pressure below the surface of the water. If, for any reason, you need to replace or service your submersible well pump, you will first need to pull it up. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Pipe cutting tools
- Ratchet, screwdriver or pliers
- Scissors or cutting blade

Instructions

1
Turn off the electrical supply to the pump at the fuse box.
-
2
Remove the well head or cap. You may need tools to complete this step such as a ratchet set or screwdriver, depending on how the well head is fastened to the shaft.

3
Pull the well pipe up, cutting the electrical wires free as you go. They will typically be taped or attached to the pipe with wire ties. If the pipe is composed of a hard material, such as PVC or metal, you will need to disassemble the pipe as you pull it up. If a soft, flexible pipe was used, coil it up away from the well head as you pull it up the shaft. You can leave the electrical wires attached to the flexible pipe if they are not to be replaced.
