1
Tackle one room at a time. Focus on the room that needs the most work, for instance, the living room area. Work on getting rid of clutter and unnecessary items in this room before working on another room. Remove items that do not belong in the area and store them in the proper place. Sentimental knickknacks often take up necessary space in homes. Store them in the attic, the top of a closet or other storage space.

2
Donate the clothes in your closet that you never wear. Many people have a closet full of clothing that needs repair, that doesn't fit or they think they will wear eventually. Chances are if you are not wearing the clothing item now, you never will. Even if you lose weight, the styles may change, therefore rendering the item useless.

Repair any clothing that is missing a button or that needs a new hem or other minor repair. Treat clothing items for stains, take them to the dry cleaner and do any other steps that will make it a useful garment. Discard any clothing that is permanently stained, ripped or torn. An organized closet provides you with additional storage space.

Remove clutter from drawers in your bedrooms, kitchen cabinets, and bathroom storage spaces. If you haven't used the item in a year, such as a kitchen gadget, you probably will never need it. Donate the usable items, and toss out anything that is broken or worn out. Getting rid of clutter in the storage areas allows you to put items in their proper place, so that they are out of sight. This makes your home look tidier.

5
Work your way through stacks of clutter on your desk, dining room table and other areas that seem to gather junk mail, magazines and other materials you intend to read eventually. If you must keep magazine articles, tear them out of the magazine and file them in a notebook or other area, such as a recipe file, if you save recipes. Discard any junk mail or out-of-date magazines or other reading material that is cluttering the surface. In the future, go through the mail as soon as you get it. Stack the bills and other important items on an organizer on your desk or in another designated area.
-
6
Discard or donate any knickknacks, excess furniture or other items that clutter your home. Thrift stores are an excellent place to get rid of items that someone else can use. Have a large garage sale to get rid of items that clutter your home and make it seem crowded. You and your family members will be surprised at how spacious your home looks once everything is in its place or in a storage area.

Tips & Warnings
An effective way to determine if a gadget, utensil or tool is necessary in your home is to pile all of them into a cardboard box. Whenever you need the item, take it out of the cardboard box, use it and then store it in the proper place. After a month, if you have not used the item, it is probably not necessary in your home.
Make use of the vertical space in your closet. Store items in clear plastic containers with a lid so that you can stack them. Label the boxes with the contents. Items that you use rarely or seasonally, such as Christmas ornaments, should go on the bottom of the stack. Items you use more often should be on top. Install shelving or a bookcase in living room or den areas if you have a lot of books or a collection you want to display.
