How to Clean the Vinyl Steps of a Saltwater Swimming Pool

A swimming pool converted to saltwater does not use traditional chemicals like chlorine to keep clean. In fact, saltwater makes natural chlorine that produces fewer toxins than traditional chemicals. Like any pool, however, dirt can accumulate, even on the vinyl steps. Use this process to clean all of the vinyl in your pool, then use a pool vacuum or run the filter to clean debris. Instructions

    • 1

Full a bucket with water from the pool.

    • 2

Wet the bristles of the nylon scrubbing brush in the bucket of water.

    • 3

Scrub the vinyl stains that are not in the water. Apply more water to the brush as needed. Use a circular motion where possible. In tight corners, use a smaller brush. To prevent tearing the vinyl, only use a nylon brush.

    • 4

Rinse off the vinyl steps with fresh pool water.

    • 5

Scrub the vinyl steps under the water's surface in the same manner as you scrubbed the other vinyl steps. Run the pool pump to clean and filter debris left from scrubbing.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your steps were covered in algae, you may need to apply algaecide after cleaning them. Apply algaecide amounts approprirate to your size of pool, as indicated on the packaging.

  • Check that the cells in your chlorine generator are clean so they produce sufficient amounts of chlorine to keep your saltwater pool clean.
