How to Use URLs In Adwords

When creating an ad to run with Google Adwords, you'll notice there are two boxes labeled "URL." This may cause confusion for some Adwords advertisers. The first URL is the "Display URL." This is the URL shown within the ad. The second is the destination URL, the page the person is directed to when the ad is clicked. Google permits you to use a different display URL than destination URL; however, the URLs must be to the same website. Do not attempt to use the URLs to trick searchers into thinking they are visiting a different site.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign in to your Google Adwords account. Click on the "Campaigns" tab.

    • 2

Click on "Create a New Campaign." Click "New Ad." If you would rather edit a current ad, click on the ad you want to edit.

    • 3

Type your headline, description line one and description line two. If you are editing a current ad, ensure you are satisfied with the current headline and description.

    • 4

Type the URL you want to show within the ad in the "Display URL" box. For example, if you are linking to a specific page on your site, you may want to only include the homepage URL in the "Display URL" box.

    • 5

Type the destination URL into the "Destination URL" box. This is the specific page you want the Google search user to visit when he clicks on your ad. If you do not have the page memorized, open it in a new browser window and copy and paste the URL into the "Destination URL" box. Click "Save Ad" to save the advertisement.

Tips & Warnings

  • The destination URL cannot be longer than 1,024 characters.
