Hard water is water that contains an excess amount of minerals such as calcium and potassium. Hard water particles can build up in your pipes and eventually clog them. You can soften water with liquid or powder water softening chemicals, or with a water softening machine. If you don't have either of these items, use a mild acid to counteract the alkalinity and reduce the effects of the hard water. Does this Spark an idea?

      Measure ¼ cup white vinegar per gallon of water. Use 1 cup of water if you are adding it to the washing machine. Do the same for a dishwasher.

      Add the appropriate amount of white vinegar to the water. White vinegar is slightly acidic and will neutralize alkaline hard water.

      Mix the water. If you are softening water in your washing machine or dishwasher simply add the clothes or dishes and let the machine run its normal cycle.
