How to Remove the Compression Rings for Plumbing


Compression rings, also called compression fittings, are used in plumbing to either connect two pipes together or connect a single pipe to a valve such as a water shutoff. The actual ring is a flexible rubber circle that sits under a metal nut and gets compressed when the nut is tightened. This compression creates a watertight seal that prevents leaks. Removing a compression ring requires specialized tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Towel
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Compression ring puller
  • Shut off the main water supply to the house by locating the rectangular metal cover in the yard near the street. Lift up on the cover until you see a knob and turn it to shut off the water. In some houses, you can shut off the water at the main valve near the water heater. Run the sink faucet or flush the toilet near where you are working in the house to remove excess water from the pipes.

  • Lay an old towel under the pipe to catch any water drips. Place the wrench around the outer metal nut on the compression fitting and turn counterclockwise until it is fully loose. Push the nut toward the wall and pull the pipe out of the compression ring.

  • Insert the coupling guide into the center of the copper pipe in the wall. The guide looks like a metal cylinder and is supplied with the compression ring puller tool.

  • Insert the threaded rod of the puller into the center hole of the coupling guide. Open the left and right arms of the puller and place them behind the metal nut on the outside of the ring.

  • Grasp the T-shaped handle at the end of the puller that is nearest you. Turn the handle clockwise to begin pulling the compression ring off the pipe. Continue turning until the compression ring comes free.
