Instructions

    • 1

Lay 36-inch felt roof underlay across the base of the first side of the roof. Secure the felt underlay to the roof by stapling the underlay every 10 to 12 inches along the entire outside perimeter.

    • 2

Place your first red cedar cut shingle so that it hangs off the side of the roof by 1½ inch and hangs off the eave of the roof by 2 inches. Move to the other end of the roof and place a shingle so that it hangs off the edge by ¼ inch and the bottom by 1 inch. Hammer a nail into the roof just above each end shingle and tie a string between them.

    • 3

Line all shingles for the first row up with the string tied between the end shingles to keep all of the shingles in line. Lay each shingle so that it sits approximately 1/8 inch from the shingle before it and secure it with two nails, driven in at roughly 1 inch from the top and ¾ inch from the side edges.

    • 4

Cut down a shingle by 2 inches in width with a circular saw. Place the shingle directly on top of the shingle at one end of the first row of shingles you already laid. Nail the shingle into place. Lay an additional row of shingles all the way down the first row, lining the shingles up with the tops and bottoms of the shingles in that row, so that the first row of shingles by the eave is double-layered.

    • 5

Put down a line of 18-inch roofing felt, allowing it to overlap the shingles by approximately 8 inches, and secure with staples. Lay the second row of shingles to overlap the first, leaving only 5 to 6 inches of the first of shingles exposed. Continue up the roof in this fashion, laying rows of felt and then shingles, so that only 5 to 6 inches of each row are exposed.

    • 6

Stop working on the first side of the roof when you reach the peak. Move to the opposite side of the roof and lay rows of felt and shingles, working upward from the bottom. At the top of the second side, nails the final row of shingles so that the tops are flush with the peak of the roof.

    • 7

Return to the first side of the roof and install the final row of shingles so that they overhang the peak of the roof and the shingles on the other side by 1 to 2 inches. Cover the exposed nails on the shingles at the peak on both sides with roofing cement.
