How to Troubleshoot the Security Light on a 1986 Nissan Maxima
Knowing that your 1986 Nissan Maxima is equipped with a security system is usually a comforting feeling. However, a blinking red light on the security system (located directly below the gauges, to the left of the steering wheel) only means that your security system is still working properly after all these years. If the security light is blinking but the car will not start, the security system may be signaling that there is a problem. The following is a list of options to try in order to find a solution to the problem and make your car functional again.
Things You'll Need
- Spare key
- 1986 Nissan Maxima owner's manual
- Security system relay
- 1986 Nissan Maxima electrical diagram
- Wire cutters

Try a spare key. The microchip may have worn out in your primary key. If this is the case, you will need to take your primary key to a Nissan dealer for reprogramming. The microchip in your spare key should still be good because you have probably used it less often. If your spare key does not work, you may be able to save money my calling a car locksmith and asking if he or she can reprogram your keys.

Turn the key in the ignition to the "On" position and wait 15 minutes. This will reset the pass lock system. If the light stops blinking, turn the key to the "Accessories" position, and then immediately to the "Off" position. Take the key out of the ignition, wait for a few seconds, and then turn the car on as normal.

If your car has a remote starter, install a relay that will bypass the malfunctioning security system. Contact your Nissan dealer or installer for more information about installing a relay system. If your car does not have a remote starter, find an electrical circuit diagram for your 1986 Nissan Maxima and locate the security immobilizer circuit. Use wire cutters to cut the circuit and solder the bypass wire in its place. Test it by turning your car on.

Go to a Nissan dealer or hardware store if you have recently replaced the ignition switch or lost a key. All Nissan dealers can duplicate a microchipped key, while only some hardware stores are able do so. Consult a Nissan expert to help you better diagnose the problem.
