How Do I Wire a 1 Ohm Hifonics BXi 1208D Amp?

How Do I Wire a 1 Ohm Hifonics BXi 1208D Amp? thumbnail
An amplifier's power output depends on the speaker it is connected to.

The Hifonics BXi1208D is a mono channel class D amplifier featuring a tuned bass equalizer, wire remote bass level control, and LED power and protection indicators. The BXi1208D is capable of producing 1,200 watts of constant power at 1 ohm, 900 watts at 2 ohms and 450 watts at 4 ohms. Achieving the desired power and ohm depends on the subwoofer the amplifier is connected to and how it is connected. For the BXi1208D to produce 1,200 watts of constant power, it must be connected to either two 4-ohm dual voice coil subwoofers or a single 2-ohm dual voice coil subwoofer.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. 2-ohm Subwoofer

    • 1

Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable with a wrench.

    • 2

Cut two sections of 14-gauge speaker wire long enough to reach from one positive (+) terminal to the other on a 2-ohm dual voice coil subwoofer with a pair of wire cutters. Cut one more section of speaker wire long enough to reach from the subwoofer to the amplifier. Use the wire cutters to remove the plastic protective coating, exposing bare wire at the ends of each section of the speaker wire.

    • 3

Connect one longer section of speaker wire to the positive chrome-plated screw terminal on the Hifonics amplifier with a screwdriver. Insert the other end into the positive barrel terminal on a 2-ohm dual voice coil subwoofer. Insert a shorter section of speaker wire into the positive barrel terminal. Tighten the barrel terminal with a screwdriver to secure both wires. Connect the other end of the shorter section to the other positive barrel terminal on the subwoofer.

    • 4

Attach the other longer section of speaker wire to the negative (-) chrome-plated screw terminal on the amplifier with the screwdriver. Insert the other end into the negative barrel terminal on the subwoofer. Insert a shorter section of speaker wire into the negative barrel terminal. Tighten the barrel terminal to secure both wires. Connect the other end of the shorter section to the other negative barrel terminal on the subwoofer. The Hifonics BXi1200D amplifier is now connected at 1 ohm.

    Two 4-ohm Subwoofers

    • 5

Disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable with a wrench.

    • 6

Cut four sections of 14-gauge speaker wire long enough to reach from one positive terminal to the other on a 4-ohm dual voice coil subwoofer with a pair of wire cutters. Cut two more sections of speaker wire long enough to reach from the subwoofer to the amplifier. Use the wire cutters to remove the plastic protective coating, exposing bare wire at the ends of each section of the speaker wire.

Connect one longer section of speaker wire to the positive chrome-plated screw terminal on the Hifonics amplifier with a screwdriver. Insert the other end into the positive barrel terminal on one of the two 4-ohm dual voice coil subwoofers. Insert a shorter section of speaker wire into the positive barrel terminal. Tighten the barrel terminal with a screwdriver to secure both wires. Connect the other end of the shorter section to the other positive barrel terminal on the subwoofer. Remove a 1/4-inch section of the plastic protective coating on the wire connecting the subwoofer to the amp. Wrap the end of another section of speaker wire around the exposed bare wire. Wrap the connection in electrical tape. Run the wire to the other subwoofer and insert the other end into the positive barrel terminal. Insert a shorter section of speaker wire into the same barrel terminal. Tighten the barrel terminal to secure both wires. Connect the other end of the shorter section to the other positive barrel terminal on the subwoofer.

Connect one of the remaining two longer sections of speaker wire to the negative (-) chrome-plated screw terminal on the Hifonics amplifier with a screwdriver. Insert the other end into the negative barrel terminal on one of the two 4-ohm dual voice coil subwoofers. Insert a shorter section of speaker wire into the negative barrel terminal. Tighten the barrel terminal to secure both wires. Connect the other end of the shorter section to the other negative barrel terminal on the subwoofer. Remove a 1/4 inch section of the plastic protective coating on the wire connecting the subwoofer to the amp. Wrap the end of another section of speaker wire around the exposed bare wire. Wrap the connection in electrical tape. Run the wire to the other subwoofer and insert the other end into the negative barrel terminal. Insert a shorter section of speaker wire into the same barrel terminal. Tighten the barrel terminal to secure both wires. Connect the other end of the shorter section to the other negative barrel terminal on the subwoofer. The Hifonics BXi1200D amplifier is now connected at 1 ohm.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you intend to wire the Hifonics BXi1200D to only one subwoofer, be sure it is rated for 1,200 watts of continuous power.
