How to Hook Up a Home-Theater System So I Hear It While I Watch Cable
Hooking up a cable receiver to a home-theater system can be done a few different ways depending on the equipment. The audio signal is transmitted from the cable receiver to the home-theater receiver via RCA audio cables or an HDMI cable. The user then switches his home-theater system to the "Cable/TV" input and the audio plays through the system while the images from the cable receiver are displayed on the TV.

1
Examine the cable box. Look on the back of the box and see what "Output" ports are there. Look for HDMI or RCA out. Examine the back of the home-theater receiver and see whether it has an "HDMI In" port for cable. All receivers have RCA ports. HDMI provides a higher quality audio signal than RCA and is preferred if possible.

Plug in either the RCA cable or HDMI cable into its respective out ports on the cable box. Both of these cables are readily available at electronics stores.
