Becoming a certified HP printer technician proves to potential clients that you have the skills and training necessary to identify and resolve printer problems, then recommend and implement solutions. To become an HP printer repair technician, you must pass a certification exam. Earning certification also can lead to partnering with HP as one of its service and repair technicians.
Details of the Exam
HP offers basic and more advanced levels of certification for printer technicians, and each requires passing an exam. Each exam measures how well you diagnose and repair printer problems, and they can include multiple-choice, graphical and written questions. You may need to have a printer available when you take the basic or advanced certification exams. HP makes exam preparation guides available on its ExpertOne training and certification website at hp.com/expertone. You can take a certification exam online, at a trade show or at an authorized testing center.
While you don't have to register and attend training programs before taking a certification exam, HP recommends that you do. For example, it offers applicants one- and two-day in-person training sessions on imaging and printing security; assessing a company's printer and imaging needs; installing and managing large numbers of printers; and document workflow.
Register for Certification Exams
Register for training courses with HP online through the HP Learning Center, then create a user profile with Pearson VUE, which delivers and grades certification exams. Some courses require you to complete prerequisites. For example, to become certified in Imaging and Printing Services and Solutions, you first must complete an imaging and printing technical fundamentals course. You must pay a fee to take a certification exam, which you can take as often as you want until you pass it, paying to do so each time.
Working with HP
After earning certification, you are eligible to work with HP as an authorized partner. HP partners with individual technicians and with companies that provide printer-repair services. Authorized partners can service and repair HP hardware products. They may provide telephone or in-person support to customers who purchase service plans. Other partners provide similar services for HP products covered by their original warranties. HP also authorizes these partners to offer post-warranty hardware support.
