How to Cleanse Your Home
Smudging rituals, cleansing techniques derived from Native American traditions, are undergone in order to cleanse individuals, objects and places of negative energy. It is thought that the negative energy becomes attached to the smoke and, as the smoke clears, so does the unwanted negativity. Cleansing your home of detrimental influences and energies, in order to encourage positivity, requires only a few materials.
Things You'll Need
- Smudge stick (such as sage or lavender)
- Matches or lighter
- Fireproof dish (such as a glass or ceramic saucer)

1
Purchase a smudge stick from a metaphysical shop or specialty boutique. Consider herbs such as sage and lavender, which are believed to purify and cleanse negative energies.
-
2
Focus on what you desire to achieve through this cleansing ritual before you begin. Visualize the outcome you are hoping for, such as a peaceful home free of conflict, anger and stress.

3
Use matches or a lighter to light the broad end of the smudge stick. Blow out the flame so that the smudge stick is smoldering and releasing smoke as opposed to burning.
-
4
Walk slowly through your home, gently waving the smudge stick in front of you to release the smoke. Pay special attention to any rooms you would particularly like to cleanse, behind doors and in corners. Focus on positive thoughts and the outcome you would like to accomplish; many individuals recite prayers.

5
Extinguish the smudge stick by pressing it against the bottom of the fireproof receptacle. Be sure that all of the embers are out before leaving the room.

Avoid using water to extinguish the smudge stick as it will be difficult to re-light.
