Installing Wooden Shutters on Brick
Wooden shutters are a versatile option due to your ability to paint or stain them a color that matches the brick on the exterior of your home. It may seem like a complicated job to mount shutters on the side of a brick home. However, installation on a brick home is not much different from installation on a home with vinyl siding. The tools you need will change slightly, but the installation instructions remain the same. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 4-foot level
- Pencil
- Drill
- 7/64-inch masonry bit
- Wall anchors
- Hammer
- Noncorrosive screws
- Phillips-head drill bit
- Tape measure

Hold one of the shutters up to the window in the location where you will be mounting it. Place a level against the side of the shutter to make sure it will be mounted straight. Mark the holes in the shutter against the brick siding. Set the shutter aside.

Drill through each mark, using a 7/64-inch masonry bit. Place a wall anchor inside each hole. Tap the head of the wall anchor with a hammer until it is flush with the surface of the brick.

Hold the shutter up to the window. Line up the holes in the shutter with the holes in the brick. Screw a noncorrosive screw into each hole, using a screwdriver.

Measure the reveal between the inside edge of the shutter you just installed and the window. Hold the second shutter up on the other side of the window. Position it so there is the same reveal between its inside edge and the window.

Place a 4-foot level against the bottom edges of both the first and second shutter to make sure the shutters are aligned. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 to secure the second shutter to the brick.

Tips & Warnings
If your wooden shutter is not predrilled, measure 4 to 6 inches from the top and bottom edges and 1 inch in from the sides to find where to place the screws. Use an 1/8-inch drill bit for the pilot holes.
