How to Measure Sink Size in Granite
When installing a sink in a granite counter top, you must cut an opening through the granite to house the sink basin. This opening is measured to specifically contain your sink, and if it is not properly cut, the installation will not be strong and long lasting. A top-mounting sink has a rim that rests right on the edge of the granite, with a basin that sits below the counter surface. Your countertop hole must be smaller than the rim but larger than the sink basin measurements. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the sink dimensions with a tape measure. Measure from the edge of the sink rim on the front to the edge of the sink rim on the back and from side to side. Take down these measurements on a piece of paper.
-
2
Measure the width of the sink rim from the basin to the edge of the rim with the tape measure and write this measurement down. This measurement is the same all the way around the sink.

3
Transfer the first measurements onto the granite countertop using a tape measure, or a drywall ruler, chalk or marker and a ruler. Draw the outline on the countertop with a ruler. Measure the width of the rim from the edge of the outline, and make a mark at each corner of the outline. Draw another outline inside the first outline using the new marks at the corners. This indicates where the edge of the rim is.

4
Draw a line in the center of the two outlines, by simply cutting the distance between the two in half, marking it and tracing a new line. This is the cutting line for your granite sink. It leaves enough room for the rim to rest on the granite, and allows plenty of room for installing the sink basin inside the hole.
