How to Remove the EGR Valve in a Ford Expedition

by Cayden Conor

The Ford Expedition's exhaust gas recirculation system reintroduces exhaust gas back into the combustion chambers to lower combustion temperature and reduce emissions. The EGR valve is vacuum operated and the amount of exhaust gas reintroduced depends on engine vacuum, engine speed, coolant temperature, backpressure and the position of the throttle as determined by the throttle position. When the EGR valve malfunctions, it might cause the Expedition to stall and causes excessive emissions.

Step 1

Loosen the clamp on the EGR valve's vacuum house, using the screwdriver, then pull the hose off the EGR valve. If the engine is a 4.6-liter engine, remove the nut and brake booster bracket, using the appropriate socket. If the engine is a 5.4-liter, remove the DPFE sensor, using the appropriate socket.

Step 2

Disconnect the EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube from the EGR valve using the appropriate socket.

Step 3

Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts, using the appropriate socket, then lift the valve off the intake manifold. Clean the gasket-mating surface on the intake manifold, using a scraper, carburetor and rags.
