How to Become a Substitute Teacher in West Tennessee

The board of education in each county in Western Tennessee sets its own requirements for substitute teachers, While you'll need to check with your county's board of education for the exact steps to become a substitute teacher in your area, parts of the application process are the same across all of Western Tennessee.

Instructions

    • 1

Earn your high school diploma or GED. All substitute teaching positions in Western Tennessee require at least this level of education. In some counties, the daily pay rate for substitute teachers is relative to your education level. For example, as of March 2011, substitutes in Obion County earn $55 a day with a high school diploma or $65 with a four-year college degree.

    • 2

Request a substitute teacher application from your local school board. Some districts allow you to print and/or submit your application online. Make careful note of application deadlines. For example, Lake County begins accepting substitute teacher applications in July of each year and closes once it receives enough applicants.

    • 3

Fill out and submit the substitute teacher application form. A typical application form asks for your educational background, work history, criminal history, and which school or schools at which you are interested in teaching. Some applications, such as Carroll County, ask you to agree to uphold the Tennessee Constitution or other principles.

    • 4

Complete the background check section of the substitute teacher application. In most cases, if you have a criminal history you cannot become a substitute teacher.

    • 5

Earn a teaching certificate if required by your county. Certificates are optional in some areas. For example, Henderson County only requires a teaching certificate if your assignment is 20 or more consecutive days.

    • 6

Complete all substitute teacher training and/or orientations required by your county. For example, Henderson County substitute teachers must attend at least one half-day in-service training per year, and Lake County substitute teachers must complete at least five online "Sub-Hub" Substitute Training Program courses.

    • 7

Submit to the drug tests and/or fingerprinting required by your county. Contact your county school board's human resources department if you are unsure how to begin this process.
