How to Stop Firefox From Auto-Choosing a Download Method

Downloading files from the Internet using Mozilla's Firefox browser can be confusing at first. That's because Firefox automatically places downloads in the "Downloads" folder on your computer without prompting you to choose a location. While bypassing specifying a location to save a file is quicker and offers instant gratification, you can opt for greater control by configuring Firefox to ask where files should be saved when you start to download them.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open Firefox.

    • 2

Click "Tools" in the upper-left corner of the Firebox browser window and then select "Options." The "Options" dialog box will appear on the screen.

    • 3

Select the "General" tab along the top of the dialog box.

    • 4

Select "Always ask me where to save files" beneath the "Downloads" section. Alternatively, click "Save files to" and click "Browse" to select your own default save location.

    • 5

Click "OK" to save your settings and return to the Firefox browser. The next time you download a file Firefox will open a dialog box asking you where you want to save the file.
