Making a kite is interesting way to learn about wind.

A flying craft project is a fun and creative way to teach kids about aerodynamics, wind and how to work with your hands. A kite is a great project and can provide hours of fun on a windy day. This project also allows the child to feel a sense of accomplishment as they watch his or her kite fly in the wind.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the two dowel rods together to make the frame of the kite. Making the frame strong is important to the integrity of the kite. Make the frame symmetrical so that the kite will be balanced.

    • 2

Use the twine or string and wrap the meeting points of the dowels so that they are securely fastened together. The joint needs to be strong and tight so that the dowels do not shift and fall apart. You can also use a drop of glue here to secure the knot in the string.

    • 3

Wrap the twine on the edges of the frame to form a surface where the paper material will mounted. Be creative and form any shape you wish. If you want a ladybug shape then make the kite rounder, or if you want to make a flying ant make the kite long and skinny. Tie knots with the string and place a drop of glue on the knots.

    • 4

Cut out a shape in the paper that will be used for the kite. Use the scissors to shape the paper body of the kite. You should cut the design with an inch of extra paper on the edge. The edges are folded over to attach to the frame so extra paper is needed.

    • 5

Color the paper body of the kite with a design that resembles the insect of your choice. This kite could be a flying insect like a ladybug or a fantasy bug like a robot ladybug. Use the markers to create your design.

    • 6

Lay the paper on the table and place the frame on top. Fold the edges of the paper over to string that forms the frame of the flying insect. Use glue or tape to secure the folded edges of the paper. You may want to use both.

    • 7

Attach your flying string to the center-most point of the kite and secure it with a knot and a drop of glue. Double check all the edges and knots on the kite to make sure they are secure.
