NetZero is an Internet service provider that offers economical online access for those on a budget. Once you have signed up for NetZero, you will be provided with an installation CD and a USB modem. NetZero is automatically compatible with Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6. You will not need to do anything special to get your NetZero Internet to work with your computer. If this is your first time connecting to the Internet, don't worry. NetZero's simple installation instructions can be understood by even the most basic beginners.

      Insert the NetZero CD into your computer's CD/DVD drive. This will launch an installation wizard. A message will appear onscreen instructing you to plug in your external modem. Connect the modem to one of your computer's USB ports.

      Enter your personal information into the installation wizard as directed. If you already have a NetZero account, type in your user info at this time. Otherwise, you will have the option to create an account. Click "Continue" once this is completed. NetZero will briefly connect to the Internet to test that the connection is set up properly. This may take a minute or two. Do not close the NetZero window during this process.

      Click to select your local access numbers. These phone numbers will help NetZero know where you are located, thus giving you a faster connection. Click "Continue" once your numbers have been selected. Click "Connect" to log onto the NetZero network. During this installation process, a NetZero icon will appear on your desktop. Anytime you want to connect to the Internet, double-click this icon and enter your account name and password.

      Launch Internet Explorer 6. Once you have established a connection with NetZero, Internet Explorer 6 will be able to connect to the Internet automatically. No further setup is required from you.

Tips & Warnings

  • As of March 2011, Internet Explorer is in version 9. If you are still using Internet Explorer 6, upgrading to IE9 is recommended (see Resources). Many improvements have been added in the newer versions, including upgraded security features.
