How to Install a Convertible Top for a '91 Mustang LX

There's nothing better on a warm summer day than to lower your convertible top and feel the warm sunshine as you drive. Over time the soft top on your 1991 Mustang LX can become worn and damaged, and require replacement. Installing a new convertible top can be a tricky process, but one that you can complete in about two hours if you have basic auto repair knowledge. You can buy the equipment needed for the job from your local auto supply store.

Things You'll Need

• Socket wrench
• Screwdriver set
• Contact cement
• Convertible top assembly

Instructions

1. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws attached to the retaining strip found on top of the rear interior body. Use your fingers to pull the tension cables away from the strip and the top bow.

2. Remove the screws which hold the weatherstripping to the bow of the convertible. Pull the weatherstripping away from the top. Carefully lift the front bow away from the frame of the vehicle. Take care not to damage the frame or bow.

3. Lift the new convertible top onto the frame. Apply a thick layer of contact cement to either side of the top bow. Wait about 30 minutes to allow the cement to set.

4. Reattach the weatherstripping by installing its screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Place contact cement on the rear section of the top in the same way as you applied it to the top bow.

5. Reconnect the tension cables to the top bow. Use your fingers to tighten the cables firmly in place.
