1
Decide where you want your plate display and how large it should be. A large expanse of empty wall space is ideal for a large number of plates, while a smaller space calls for only a few plates.
-
2
Mark on the wall in pencil where the plates should hang. A tight irregular cluster of plates creates a dense, organic look, while an evenly-spaced geometric cluster creates a more open, even look.
-
-
3
Mount the plates on plate hangers. Plate hangers, available at hardware stores, mount the plates on pronged holders and provide a loop from which the plate hangs. Follow the instructions on the packaging to appropriately mount the plate.
-
4
Hold one mounted plate up to the wall where you want it to be and mark with a pencil where the nail needs to go.
-
5
Tap a nail into the space indicated by the pencil mark. If you are installing the plate on drywall, use an awl to make a small hole in the drywall, and screw in a drywall anchor. A drywall anchor provides threading that allows you to insert a screw in the wall.
-
6
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each plate.
-
7
Hang your plates.

Tips & Warnings
Position your plates in a sweep along the wall of your stairway. This takes your plates out of common viewing areas and instead places them in the corner of the eye as you ascend or descend the staircase.
Arrange plates with similar colors in a small, tight cluster above a workspace or activity area. The small cluster draws immediate attention to the area while providing a decorative motif.
Arrange plates that are different sizes in an irregular cluster above the workspace. Alternatively, use identical plates arranged in a symmetrical pattern, like a flower or a starburst.
