How to Change TCP/IP Settings in Vista

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) determines how a network-capable device connects and communicates with other devices. In Microsoft Windows Vista, the TCP/IP-related settings control whether your computer connects via a dynamic or static connection. While a dynamic connection generally does not require any additional information, a static connection requires you to input your settings in the TCP/IP component manually. You can access the TCP/IP settings within the Network and Sharing Center.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the Windows and "R" keys simultaneously on the keyboard to display a Run prompt.

    • 2

Type "Ncpa.cpl" in the Run dialog and press "Enter." This opens the Network Connections window on your screen.

    • 3

Right-click your network connection and click "Properties." This opens the Properties dialog window on your screen.

    • 4

Double-click "Internet Protocol Version 4" under the "This Connection uses the Following Items" section. This loads a TCP/IP properties dialog on your screen.

    • 5

Click the "Use the following IP address" radio button to allow the ability to type in static IP address information. In this section, "IP address" is the field used for your static IP. "Subnet Mask" is your network or ISP's assigned subnet and "Default Gateway" is your ISP or network's gateway address. Your ISP or network administrator should supply all of these numbers to you if you are on a static network.

    • 6

Click the "Use the following DNS..." radio button to allow the ability to type in a static DNS address. The "Primary DNS server" is the first server Windows tries to use and the "Alternate DNS Server" is the server Windows uses in the event the primary fails. While your ISP or network administrator supplies both of these numbers, you can also use a set of third-party DNS addresses if desired.

Click "OK" to close the TCP/IP properties window. This takes you back to the main properties window. Click "OK" at the bottom to close the window.
