Fringe Tassel Instructions
If you crochet, knit, sew or quilt, you can embellish your textiles with tassels. A fringe tassel is a gathering of loose yarn or thread that hangs from the end or corner of a blanket, rug, fashion accessory or piece of clothing. How you apply a fringe tassel to your main creation depends on whether you are relying on needlework or a sewing machine. Tassels can be bought at local fabric stores, or they can be handmade at home.
Things You'll Need
- Piece of cardboard
- Scissors
- Yarn
- Crochet hook
- Tassel trim
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine

Make a Tassel
-
1
Decide how long you want your fringe to be, and cut a small piece of cardboard to match the desired length.
-
2
Hold the end of your yarn at the bottom edge of the cardboard and wrap it five to eight times around the length of the board. If you find the yarn to be too thick, unwrap it once or twice. Keep in mind that the more you wrap the yarn around the cardboard, the thicker the tassel will be.
-
-
3
Cut the yarn horizontally across the bottom edge of the cardboard so that the fringe is loose on one end.
-
4
Insert a crochet hook into an edge loop of your crocheted or knitted project. Fold your fringe yarn strands in half, and using the crochet hook, pull the loop of the fringe halfway through the stitch of your project.
-
5
Use your fingers or the crochet hook to pull the loose ends of the fringe through the loop created when you pulled the tassel halfway through the project's stitch.
-
6
Trim the fringe to make sure that it hangs evenly. Embellish crocheted or knitted afghans by attaching fringe tassels to the four corners, or decorate the borders of an afghan with fringe to give it a shaggy look.

7
Buy trim tassel (a strip of connected fringe tassels) by the yard at your local fabric store.
-
8
Pin the tassel strip to your main material with straight pins to hold the tassels in place.
-
9
Remove the straight pins as you sew the trim tassel onto your material. Sew along the top strip of the trim so the tassels hang loosely.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure that your handmade fringe tassel does not come undone by pulling it tightly after looping it through your crocheted or knitted work.
