How to Treat a Pet Urine Stain on Your Upholstery
Pet urine stains can ruin upholstery if not properly cleaned in a timely manner. If your dog, cat or other pet has an accident on your upholstered furniture, act quickly to ensure maximum removal. Things You'll Need
- White vinegar
- Damp cloth
- Soft cloths
- Paper towels
- Hair dryer
- Baking soda
- Vacuum cleaner

Blot the liquid using paper towels. If the stain has already set, you can skip this step, but if the area still appears damp, use paper towels to absorb the excess urine. Don't rub or wipe the urine, but dab gently until you successfully absorb as much of the liquid as possible.

Mix one tablespoon of distilled vinegar with two cups of water. The acid in the vinegar reacts with the acid in the urine, breaking up the stain and making removal easier. Apply the solution to a soft cloth, using just enough to dampen the surface.

Wipe the stain in small circular motions, using the dampened cloth. You will likely notice a pungent smell due to the vinegar, but the odor will disappear. Wipe the stain until the urine residue begins to lift, and use a second dampened cloth, without vinegar, to rinse.

Dry your upholstered surface using heat. Upholstery is very porous, and therefore requires manual drying. Failing to do so may attract mold spores. Use a space heater or a hair dryer for best results, and continue distributing the heat until the upholstery feels completely dry.

Sprinkle baking soda over your upholstery to absorb any lingering urine odor, as well as any remaining moisture. For excessive odors, you can also purchase a pet deodorizer powder from your local pet store. Look for deodorizers with baking soda. Apply according to directions, and vacuum the upholstery 30 minutes to one hour after applying the powder.
