A Homemade Lake Water Aerator

A water aerator pumps oxygen into the lake or pond to minimize the growth of algae and improve the health of the fish living in it. Water aerators are necessary for lakes and ponds that are not filled by streams, are not exposed to the wind or do not have rain enough rain water. If the oxygen level in the lake or pond decrease, fishes can be slower to grow or die.

Things You'll Need

  • Air pump
  • Air hose
  • One way air valve
  • Cinder block
  • Boat
  • Use a weighted line on a boat to measure the depth at the center of the pond or lake.

  • Measure the distance between the center of the lake or pond and the shore where you will have your compressor located.

  • Add the two numbers found in Step 1 and Step 2 to know hoe much air hose you need to purchase.

  • Calculate the power of the air compressor you need to purchase.

  • Install your air compressor. Make sure the terrain is away from any water corridor and stable enough for the weight of the compressor.

  • Connect the one way air valve to one end of the hose and the other end to the compressor.

  • Tie the end with the one-way valve to a cinder block. Make sure not to compress the hose.

  • Use your boat to position the end of the hose in the center of the lake. Put it in place, and let it sink.

  • Fill the air compressor with gas, or connect it to the electric outlet.

  • Turn the compressor on for 30 minutes the first day, one hour the second day, and double the time the compressor is on every day, until the compressor runs all the time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on your climate, you can protect the compressor by building a concrete footing and/or a small wood shed.
  • Make sure the hose does not move from the position at the center of the lake.
