Get advice on earning a college degree and graduating.

Earning your college degree and graduating is a huge accomplishment. The process, however, is sometimes long and challenging. There's the challenge of selecting the right college and major, paying for school, staying focused and juggling class, work and other activities. In preparation for life beyond college, many students have second thoughts and change their major before graduation. A little hard work and determination can help you reach your goals more quickly. Planning ahead helps.

Instructions

  1. Before College

    • 1

Prepare for college before you graduate from high school. Starting in the 9th grade, take classes in your major and participate in extra-curricular activities. Start reviewing colleges and checking into internships.

    • 2

Volunteer where you can in the 10th grade. Prepare for college-entry tests by registering for the PSAT or PLAN.

    • 3

Meet with your guidance counselor to ensure you're taking the correct classes for college in the 11th grade. Take the PSAT or PLAN in the fall. Register to take the SAT or ACT the following spring. Use the summer to visit colleges and universities you want to attend.

    • 4

Take and pass the SAT or ACT in 12th grade. Apply to colleges and universities offering your major and apply for financial aid/scholarships. Send your college transcript, ACT or SAT scores and other paperwork the school needs.

    While in College

    • 5

Attend the orientation to meet your advisers, select/enroll in classes and prepare for college life.

    • 6

Review the course catalog and meet with your adviser to verify you are taking the correct classes for your major and graduation.

    • 7

Follow the plan of courses for your major, taking the general courses first so you'll have the prerequisites for other classes. Some classes fill up fast, so enroll early. Enroll in classes that are offered once a year as soon as you can. If you're transferring credits to another college, verify that the classes transfer.

    • 8

Maintain the minimum grade point average required for graduation.

    • 9

Follow your school's guideline and timeline for graduation the semester before you graduate. Some colleges, such as Florida State Panama City, want students to apply for graduation on the first day of class for the semester they plan to graduate.
