Trains were once the preferred mode of transportation for long trips.

Amtrak has over 500 destinations throughout 46 of the United States, as well as the District of Columbia and three provinces in Canada. As of 2011, Amtrak offers discounts to certain types of riders, such as children, seniors, AAA members, active-duty U.S. military personnel, students and veterans. Amtrak allows prospective passengers to log onto its website to view and purchase seats for their upcoming trips. This technology enables passengers to reserve seats on Amtrak with relative ease.
